Changes in Haemoglobin Values and Hepatosplenomegaly Produced by Control of Holoendemic Malaria.

چکیده
In many parts of the tropics the mean haemoglobin values of rural populations are very much lower than the values accepted as normal elsewhere. For example, among Bougainville Islanders Cotter et al. (1958) found means of 13.09 and 11.97 g./100 ml. for adult males and females respectively. They suggested controlled experiments were needed to assess the relative importance of each individual factor that could be contributing to such low levels. This paper describes an experiment to determine the effects on haemoglobin values of three years' malaria control in part of the Sepik District, New Guinea. The concomitant changes in clinical hepatosplenomegaly are also described. Draper (1960) has quoted conflicting findings on the importance of malaria as a cause of anaemia in African infants, and he noted that little was known about its effect on adults who had acquired some immunity. In Taveta-Pare, a hyperendemic malarious area of Tanganyika, he found that malaria control for three years was accompanied by great improvement in the mean haemoglobin values of all age-groups. However, he reported that there had also been a general rise in living standards in the area during the same period. There are considerable malariological differences, especially in malarial-species ratios and adult palpable spleen rates, between New Guinea and East Africa.

Efficacy of a low-dose ferric-EDTA in reducing iron deficiency anaemia among underfive children living in malaria-holoendemic district of Mvomero, Tanzania.
Iron deficiency anaemia is a public health problem in Tanzania especially among children under the age of five years. In malaria holoendemic areas, control of anaemia by supplementation with iron has been reported to increase serious adverse events. The World Health Organization recommends that, programs to control anaemia in such areas should go concurrently with malaria control programmes. Th...
متن کاملAbsorption Spectra of Normal Adults and Patients with Sickle Cell Anaemia Haemoglobins Treated with Hydrogen Peroxide at Two pH Values
Background: The aim of the present study was application of haemoglobin absorption spectroscopy as a distinguishing tool for identification of two haemoglobin types-HbA and HbS. Material and Methods: Millimolar absorptivities of normal adult haemoglobin (HbA) and sickle cell haemoglobin (HbS) were monitored at pH values of 7.2 and 5.0, within the ultra violet and visible spectral range (250-...
متن کاملThe Effects of Splenectomy on Pattern of Nitric Oxide Induction and Pathogenesis of Rodent Malaria Caused by Plasmodium berghei Infection
Background and Aims: The aim of this study is to clarify nitric oxide (NO)-production by spleen and the importance of spleen in malaria infection in murine model. Materials and Methods: Thirty outbred NMRI female mice were divided into four groups, Group I: No intervention (Healthy control), Group II: With splenectomy (Healthy test), Group III: No intervention, Inoculation of contaminated bloo...
متن کاملMalaria morbidity among school children living in two areas of contrasting transmission in western Kenya.
Research in malaria-endemic areas is usually focused on malaria during early childhood. Less is known about malaria among older school age children. The incidence of clinical attacks of malaria was monitored, using active case detection in primary schools, in two areas of western Kenya that differ in the intensity of transmission. Clinical malaria was more common in schools in the Nandi highlan...
متن کاملAn analysis of haematological parameters in patients and individual residents of a Plasmodium falciparum malaria holoendemic area of western Kenya.
Many clinical symptoms of malaria are associated with alterations in certain haematological parameters during acute and subclinical infections. Total leucocyte and erythrocyte counts, haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit and other minor indices, were investigated in five cohort groups of individuals resident in a malaria hyperendemic area of western Kenya. The groups included age- and sex-mat...
